About a year ago, my son gave me a bird feeder with a motion sensor camera built into it. Since then, I have really been enjoying getting to see some close-up pictures and videos of the many birds that visit.

Sometimes I don't recognize them, and I have to look them up. One of the visitors was a brown-headed cowbird. When I researched it, I found out that it was classified as a parasitic bird.

There's about 5% of the bird population that will lay their eggs in other birds' nests and let the unsuspecting birds raise the hatchlings as their own. But because these cowbirds are usually bigger than the rest of the babies, they will push the others out of the nest.

When I realized this, I wanted nothing to do with this bird. I didn't want it eating the bird seed I put out for the other birds. I didn't want to save any pictures of it.

....But then I realized I was judging these birds.

I was watching a video of the cowbird, and the audio caught the song of this bird. Its short chirps had the most beautiful, sweet sound. It softened my heart a little bit. I decided to look up the spiritual meaning for the cowbird. There are quite a number of different ones.

Many of the meanings are characteristics of what the bird does but by saying it in a spiritual, helpful way.

One example is the cowbird often comes to people struggling with abandonment issues. The message could be that sometimes there is a very good reason for someone leaving and we may never know why, and sometimes they may return out of the blue.

And then there is the message of the hurt, inner child. Adults often turn away from their childlike innocence, that sense of wonder, detaching and leaving it behind, hidden away. The message could then be telling you it’s time to "hatch" that playful part of yourself into your reality or else someone or something may have to be the one who takes care of it for you.

Both those messages could be talking to me and many other people as well.

When you see something out of the ordinary, it usually is bringing a special message just for you. It is good to look up the meanings but then stop to think about which one resonates most with you.

As I watched the video, which ran for about a minute, the bird puffed up its body, stretched its feathers and gave its bird song three different times in this one minute.

To me, this message says, do not try to stay small. Expand yourself and stand in your power. Let yourself be seen and heard. Others want to hear what you have to say.  Don't worry about what other people think, be true to yourself.

If you see something in nature and need help interpreting it, I can give you some insight. I do offer this service for a nominal amount of $24. You can check it out here on my website if you would like to learn more.  Look under services and then what are the Nature Angels showing you?

The camera couldn't capture the whole image of the bird, but I like this photo because it seems as if the cowbird was bowing to me.

Namaste, the light in me sees the light in you.
